HUNTINGTON BEACH, FEBRUARY 12 – GREAT AMERICAN ADVENTURE RUN (at Central Park West):

From John Tiffin, ŌHere are the results of a 4.8 mile cross country race my son John and I ran. It rained all of the previous day so the dirt portions of the course were entirely mud, which made it even more fun, Although I was listed as second in my age group, the person who was shown as first said afterwards that he had missed a turn and ran almost 1/2 mile less than the full course. With two sons now in the Los Angeles area, IÕm finding more reasons to looks for races that coincide with my visits. My next one may be a 5K on April 2 in La Habra that begins next to a Krispy Kreme. Maybe IÕll be lucky and that will be where they host the post-race meal.Ķ  Results:

1. Patrick Green 28:21 .. 19. John S. Tiffin (2nd-18/23) 36:34 .. 20. John M. Tiffin (2nd-55/59) 36:53. (53 finishers)

*Since the 10K was two laps of the 5K course, the time listed after each personÕs name in the 10K is the half way split time. Paul Lee was officially entered in both races and was the first to pass the 5K mark in the shorter race.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, MARCH 5 – TSUNAMI RELIEF FUND 5K (at Laguna Lake Park):

From Paul Lee, ŌI was a little stiff from the 10K in Cambria earlier in the morning so I ran the first mile easy only to find the course was just a mile and a half long. I finished 8th in 9:07 after eyeing the possibility of moving up to 3rd had it been an actual 5K (the first two finishers were well ahead). The age groups were 12 & under, 13-17, 18-49 and 50+ so I didn't place in my group. The great majority of the participants were students. There were around 250 runners and walkers with 100% of the proceeds, over $70,000, going to a Sri Lankan orphanage through the VeAhavta Relief Organization. Other SLDC finishers that I knew of were Kathy Pycior (15:52), probably winning her age group, and Don Pycior (29 minutes for the walk). The run was scheduled to begin at 11:00 but wasnÕt started until 11:15 due to the large turnout. There was no chute and competitors had to form a line so officials could keep the finish order accurate. This obviously would have been less of a problem if it were the advertised distance but it was for a good cause. Awards went to first in each age group plus some random prizes.Ķ

From Jerry Hill, ŌCindy and I accompanied Teri Rose and Jim Dempsey to the Napa Valley Marathon. Jim and Teri ran the marathon on no more than three weeks of training with their longest run being 12 miles. They completed the very nice course in 4:04. My daughter, Sherry, having completed her first marathon at Big Sur last year for her 40th birthday, has promised to run Napa Valley with me next year.Ķ
