Buzz Marathon at Camp Roberts                    by Leah Etling, Santa Barbara AA

Camp Roberts doesn't look like much from the freeway. You see a lot of old wooden buildings, which were once barracks that housed soldier trainees during World War II. I didn't know anything about this place until it recently became part of my job to know what was going on there. I learned about the camp's ongoing training of soldiers deploying to Iraq, indoor artillery ranges, and history museum. If you have a relative or friend in the National Guard, they've probably spent a few weekends at Camp Roberts, where they can do everything from drive a black out course at night to launch bombs at "enemy" hillsides. Over the last several decades, environmentalists monitoring these activities have become part of the staff. One reason the environmentalists are there is that the camp's 40,000 acres are home to endangered animals and plants, including the elusive San Joaquin kit fox. Nevertheless, portions of it are open to the public for hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and marathon running.

Each February, CR hosts one of the smallest marathons in the state of California. This isn't the sort of place where you can go and drive around as you please so the Buzz Marathon, benefiting Lillian Larsen School of nearby San Miguel, is a great way to learn its geography and scenery. There's also a half marathon, which takes place on the same course, and a 5K that circles the barracks. It's all organized by a dedicated teacher from the school, Eileen Rogers, who started a much-needed sports program for the kids of San Miguel. She funds all the sports teams with proceeds from this race. The course isn't easy. There's a gain of 500 feet in the first 13 miles and then you lose that 500Ő on the way back to the finish. About 400 of the 500Ő is included in one cherry hill between miles 5 and 6 (this is a great place to ditch someone pushing a baby jogger). There's also a lot of rolling hills, especially between miles 9 and 12. The weather is unpredictable and in February can be anything from freezing with intermittent hailstorms to the 70-degree plus sunshine we had in 2007. The scenery is gorgeous. Besides the buildings in the first mile, satellites at the top of the hill, and an airstrip at mile nine and a half, all you see is hills, trees, streams and beautiful open sky.. Aid stations were available every two miles. If possible, bring your own support crew, whether they hang out and wait for you at the finish or drive the course and cheer like maniacs. It's so isolated on certain parts of the course that you feel like you're the only runner out there, which is really neat.
