POZO, JULY 4 Ð 11TH ANNUAL POZO SALOON 5K: Cal Poly grad Ryan Hayes, one of the top ranked runners in the Pacific Association, made it 11 winners in a row at Pozo under the 15:00 mark on this flat out-and-back course. . . 55 club members and their families made up almost 1/3 of the field, ranging in age from 10 to 79 and in places from 4th to 187th. . . Arizona StateÕs Amanda Lyon, the second place woman, is Todd BarnesÕ niece and started running this race in her early teens. . . Jeff Bedell was back on the roads after a serious accident in May had left him hospitalized. . . Thanks to Joe Rubio for putting Brian WaterburyÕs name on the race shirt. Brian ran this race numerous times, including his masters 5K PR of 16:40 in 1994.

This race was once one of the main ones in the area with 200+ runners each year and winning times under 50 minutes. After it almost disappeared in the early 1990ÕÕs, Luis Escobar has been keeping it going with the help and sponsorship of Santa Maria runners including Jim Batterson, Gary Silva, Tim Cullum, Doug Sims, Paul Prochaska, Gino Brunello, Ron Levy, Buzz Vale, John Carmichael, & Mark Martins. It is held in conjunction with the Santa Barbara County Fair and covers a flat course through ag fields from the start at Mary van Buren School to the finish at the Fairgrounds on Stowell Road.
