MORRO BAY, JULY 9 – BRIAN WATERBURY MEMORIAL ROCK TO PIER RUN  (Morro Bay to Cayucos)

A record crowd of 781 finishers, up more than 100 from last year, turned out on a beautiful day to run along the beach from the rock to the pier. Although nearly lost in the huge crowd of visitors from the valley (more than 100 from Bakersfield alone), there were still more than 50 runners from SLDC including more than a dozen award winners. Race winner J.J. Duke, formerly from Clovis and now running for Arizona State, added this victory to his 2003 win and made it half a dozen top five finishes while Jill Boaz took her first win here in a time bettered only by 2003 winner Linda Somers-Smith. Included in the field were the 2004 & 2005 winners of the Brian Waterbury Memorial Scholarship at SLOHS, Jenna Kingma & Bradley Schorer, who not only ran but helped at the awards ceremony by handing out the medals to the divisional award winners.  - / www.buzzwordproductions.com / -

LIVERMORE, JULY 9 & 10 – REGION 14 JUNIOR OLYMPICS (top three in each event advance to nationals):

1500M: Midget Boys – 4. Willie Ruoff 5:12.98 (PR).     Youth Girls – 1. Jordan Hasay 4:28.79 (new natl. record).

3000M: Youth Boys - 4. Taylor Castanon 10:04.00. (PR, missed qualifying for nationals by 18/100 of a second).

3000M: Intermediate Boys - 5. Luke Meek 11:09.58.  Youth Girls – 1. Jordan Hasay 9:42 (beat all Youth boys).

Others - Tonie Williams of SLOHS was 4th in the 400 (59.54) and 1st in the 800 (2:19.46) in the Intermediate Girls.

From Jim Barodte, ÒHere's the report from the Region 14 J.O. Championships held in Livermore this weekend. Jordan ran the 3000 Saturday and the 1500 on Sunday. She was on record pace in the 3K but they had put the boys in with the girls and that caused lots of problems. That shouldnÕt have happened at a National Qualifying meet but the starter did what he was told. From the gun, a boy took the lead and Jordan tucked in behind waiting for him to fade. Every time Jordan would move out to pass, the boy would surge and not let Jordan by. This kept up for 800M until the boys coach yelled at him to knock it off. Then she had to contend with lapped boys and girls, having to move out each time. After that, she came up on a girl she was lapping who decided to surge and not let Jordan by. That may have not been so bad but the girl stopped her surge with Jordan right behind her, bringing Jordan almost to a complete halt. After all that, Jordan still ran a 9:42.25. Fortunately, the 1500 went much smoother. I had given Jordan splits designed to break 4:30 which she did, hitting the splits perfectly. She really worked at staying on pace and pushed the third lap and last 300. She broke her two week old Youth record of 4:33.30 and lowered it to 4:28.79.

         Her splits were: 3000M - 1:08, 2:23 (1:15), 3:40 (1:17), 5:00 (1:20), 6:20 (1:20), 7:42 (1:22), 9:04 (1:22), 9:42.25.

1500M - 1:08.1, 2:20.9 (1:12.8), 3:34.9 (1:14.0), 4:28.79. So now we're off to Indianapolis in 3 weeks. The other Roo Rats also did very well in their races. Taylor Castanon took fourth place in the Youth Boys 3000 in 10:04.00, running an 8 second PR and missing third by 0.18 seconds. Willie Ruoff also PR'ed in the Midget Boys 1500, taking fourth and running a 5:12.98 while Luke Meek was 5th in his race. Unfortunately, only the top three qualified for Nationals so the boys do not get to make the trip.Ó

SANTA BARBARA, JULY 10 – 26TH CHUCKÕS BEACH RUN (Leadbetter Beach, 6 miles, 143 finishers):

1. Steve Rider/SBAA 33:45 .. 3. Paul Lee-Pismo Beach/SLDC 34:33 (the day after running Rock to Pier).

SANTA MARIA, JULY 17 – 36TH FIELDS TO FAIR TEN MILE (Guadalupe to the Santa Maria Fairgrounds):

From Luis Escobar, Meet Director, ÒFields to Fair was a great success. This year we had 68 finishers, double the number from last and including members of the Santa Maria and Righetti High School cross country teams. I believe that these young runners will breath some life back into this old race.Ó       - / www.allwedoisrun.com / -
