From Stephanie Krouse, ÒThe first Guadalupe Half Marathon Run/10K Walk was a big success. I learned so much in preparing for this event over the last six months and it was great to have the help of veteran runners like Luis, Tim Cullum, Geoff Clinton and Colette Evans. Thanks for publishing the event info in the SLDC newsletter and I was glad that so many SLDC members participated. Hopefully, the event will continue to grow in the future and help put the small town of Guadalupe on the map in a truly positive light.Ó

OSTRAVA, CZECH REPUBLIC, JULY 13 - I.A.A.F. WORLD YOUTH TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

                                                        Girls 1500 Meters - 2. Jordan Hasay/USA 4:17.24.

From The Tribune (by Joshua Scroggin) - Jordan Hasay, the 15-year-old distance runner from Arroyo Grande, placed second among a world-class group of runners in her first international meet Friday. Hasay, a junior at Mission Prep, ended her 2007 track season by taking the silver medal in the girls 1,500-meter race at the IAAF World Youth Track and Field Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic. She became the first female member of Team USA to place higher than 10th in the event at either the youth or junior levels. ÒItÕs really an honor,Ó Hasay said in a phone call from Ostrava. ÒIÕm excited because I wanted to do well for the team and IÕm glad that I could do that. It gives me a lot of motivation to represent the U.S.Ó Finishing in 4:17.24, Hasay was sandwiched between two Kenyans. The second-place showing provided Hasay with a big shot of confidence, coming as it did on the international stage, and could be a career building block for a young runner who aspires to compete in the Olympics.

Doug Speck of Dyestatcal called HasayÕs performance the top international accomplishment by a California high schooler in nearly 30 years. ÒThis is taking her act to a far higher level than itÕs ever been before,Ó said Speck. HasayÕs finish is even more impressive considering the United StatesÕ dearth of success in distance events. Chantelle Dron in 2003 was the only other U.S. runner to make the final in a world championship meet at the youth or junior level, placing 10th. ÒThe distance races for the most part have become an all-African show,Ó Speck said. ÒItÕs amazing to see Jordan able to break into that. ItÕs a big tribute to Jordan and her accomplishments.Ó

HasayÕs list of accomplishments includes multiple state and national championships in track and cross country. As a middle schooler competing for

the San Luis Distance Club, she broke Mary Decker SlaneyÕs world mile record for 13-year-olds. Most recently, Hasay set a sophomore record in the 1,500 at the USA Junior Outdoor National  Championships in 4:16.98, qualifying her for next yearÕs Olympic Trials. So much success at a young age has created an immense amount of pressure on Hasay to continue her record-breaking career. But FridayÕs international experience should help her relax for big meets in the future, Mission Prep coach Armando Siqueiros said. ÒI think it will. It helps put some perspective to it,Ó Siqueiros said. ÒThereÕs still going to be pressure to perform. ThereÕs going to be the expectations that other people have for her. ÒThis helps her recognize that, ÔIf I can relax, then IÕll be just fine.Ó

Hasay was satisfied with her result Friday but criticized herself for some of the execution of her race strategy.  She wasnÕt happy with leading the first 200 meters and thought she went too fast on the initial lap. When it came to the end, she thought she should have pushed harder for the lead before the final 100. ÒThere are a couple of errors that I made,Ó Hasay said, Òbut that always happens and IÕll learn from it for next time.Ó In most races Hasay runs, there is no competition and her racing strategy has more to do with the clock than the other competitors. Hasay and Siqueiros agree the experience she received of having to react and change speeds as needed was invaluable. Hasay vowed not to make the same mistakes twice. ÒI got a lot of experience, and IÕm happy that I could come over here and get close to a personal best,Ó Hasay said. ÒAnd hopefully, next time at World Juniors, IÕll be able to get the gold.Ó
