ST. GEORGE, UTAH, OCTOBER 5 - ST. GEORGE MARATHON: From Dave Bourne, S.L.O. -

"I ran the St. George Marathon, a very well organized race over a beautiful course. It’s so popular that a lottery is usedto limit entries bit it still had 4,300 starters with 4,227 completing the race. Mark Smith was 500th in 3:20:03, Brandi Newman, 21, from San Luis Obispo finished in 4:32:03, and Leon Glassburn, 75, came in at 5:19:05. As for me, it was 4:47:47 and I took some nice panoramic pictures while on the course. As a footnote, Shirley Blush of Rancho Palos Verdes won her age division for the 10th time and two weeks later won her division at the City to Sea Half Marathon."

NIPOMO, OCTOBER 12 - NIPOMO YOUTH COALITION OCTOBER FESTIVAL 4 MILE RUN:

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, OCTOBER 13 - THE CHICAGO MARATHON: From Larry Hibberd -

"I ran my first ever marathon in Chicago and it was a great event. There was tremendous support from the 7,000 volunteers and estimated two million people that lined the course which goes through many Chicago neighborhoods. It was clear and cold, dropping as low as 30 degrees - perfect for running. There were four hours of local TV coverage, a world’s record for women by Paula Radcliffe (22nd overall in 2:17:18), and and the 4th fastest time ever for men (2:05:56 by Khalid Khannouchi with four others under 2:07). It was the second largest marathon in the world this year with 31,103 finishers. My daughter Sonia and her husband Jason Kesselring ran the whole race together and finished side by side, even though the chip times show them separated by three runners. They finished in 4:23:52 (17,486th & 17,490th places) and I ran 5:12:01 for 26,931st overall and 506th out of 652 in my age group." (Sonia, running her first marathon, was a member of the cross country team during her days at Arroyo Grande High School and ran for Knox College in Illinois.) - / www.chicagomarathon.com / -
