SANTA BARBARA, NOVEMBER 6 – SANTA BARBARA NEWS PRESS 5K & HALF MARATHON:

With a good mix of youth and experience (age), SLDC had 4 of the top five finishers in the 5K and, along with James Manning, 5 of the top 6 age graded times.

5K (237 finishers) – 1. Jordan Hasay (13F)  16:44 .. 3. Taylor Castanon (13) 19:17 .. 4. Jedd Hasay (11) 19:39 ..5. Stanley Reyes (50) 20:18 .. 12. James Manning (58) 21:48 .. 53. Demitria Castanon (10F) 26:01 .. 54. Troy Castanon 26:02.        Half Marathon (1,244 finishers) – 1143. Shelley (Dorn) Benson/SLO 2:47:08.

Half Marathon Walk (216 finishers) – 1. Mike Counts/SLO 2:09:35 .. 190. Jeanne Dorn/SLO 4:02:38.

From the Santa Barbara News Press, ÒJordan Hasay, the sensational 13-year-old from Arroyo Grande, won't be able to claim an official record for her 16:44 time in the News-Press 5K Run Saturday because the course is not certified by USA Track and Field. Hasay's age-group record remains the 16:49 she ran in Paso Robles shortly after her September 26th birthday. That still gives her almost a year to lower the mark before she turns 14. Hasay, a sprite at 5-foot-1 and 90 pounds, finished more than 1 1/2 minutes ahead second place in the 3.1-mile run along the Santa Barbara waterfront. "I don't like people in front of me," she said after the race.Ó

PHOENIX, ARIZONA, NOVEMBER 14 – NEW TIMES 10K: From The Arizona Republic (by Jim Gintonio) – Californian claims 10K over Kenyan - The winner in the New Times 10K was out of his comfort zone. Christian Hesch, whose forte is the mile, surprised Kenyan Charles Kamindo with a late kick and won by three seconds in 29:21. The top three, which included Wilson Komen (29:40), all finished in less than 30 minutes. About 10,000 runners and walkers competed in the 29th annual event, held at Steele Indian School Park. Hesch, who lives in Morro Bay, California, stayed in the lead pack from the start and said he never doubted he would win. "They (the Kenyans) made a couple of moves, but the moves weren't anything special," said Hesch, 29, who at times during the race smiled and gave a thumbs-up to the pace vehicle. "If these guys want to take me, they have to run away with it and they didn't do that. If it's one thing I'm good at, it's sticking with people. Sometimes people have a problem with someone not carrying their share of the work, but my attitude is that I run the mile, this isnÕt my event, and I don't have any obligation to lead." Kamindo, 23, began pushing the pace at the three-mile mark. He joked that if he had known that Hesch was such a good sprinter, "I would have started my kick with a mile to go."
