Hasay shatters Laguna course record; Hallanan repeats as boys champion (by Erick Smith, The Tribune)  - Jordan Hasay and Travis Hallanan successfully defended their SLO County cross country titles on Thursday. From the pop of the starterÕs gun, Hasay broke to an early lead that increased as the race progressed. ÒI tried to do my best and go as fast as I could,Ó the Mission Prep runner said. ÒAfter the first mile I was at 5:20 and then I tried to push the final 800 meters.Ó Hasay set a new course record of 17:10, 12 seconds under her previous mark of 17:22. Sharing similar success, Hallanan won the boys race over Paso Robles teammate Reihia Todd in 16:08. ÒIt was challenging because IÕm a competitive person,Ó Hallanan said. ÒWeÕre friends but when you step on the course, heÕs another person I want to beat.Ó Todd was 10 seconds behind in 16:17. For the final half of the race, it was a two man battle. ÒI expected to either shake everybody or have it be a kickers race at the end,Ó Hallanan said. ÒIt was a nice compromise to have Reihia with me because he is the only one I would like to have there.Ó

LOS OSOS, OCTOBER 28 - BAYWOOD OCTOBERFEST FOUR MILE:

Times were especially fast in the 2007 Octoberfest Race as three records were broken and one record was tied. Christian Hesch tied the record for fastest time ever at 18:31 and now shares that record with Cal Poly coach Mark Conover, who set his mark in 1988. New records, all by SLDC members, were recorded by Rachael Jelstrom (26:02) in the 12-14 age division, just nipping the 26:03 time by Rebecca Reyes in 2001; Mary Cooper (27:45) shattered the record set by Marion McKenna (29:27 in 1999) in the 50-59 division; and Nova Poff (35:18) blew away the 1999 time of 39:11 (Ellie Foppiano). The overall race was fast thanks to the addition of a dozen runners from Cal Poly with the top 20 finishers all under 21:00. The Morro Bay Cross Country team and coaches would like to thank Ron Roundy (Race Director) and all of the local sponsors and runners who have so generously supported the Junefest and Octoberfest Runs over the years. Your help is deeply appreciated!      - / From Cary Nerelli / -
