SEPTEMBER 29 - HERITAGE OAKS BANK 10K: KENYANS COME TO PASO ROBLES!
This was a series of 7 races in downtown Paso Robles, starting with the featured 10K with $30,000 in prize money and winding up with a two mile walk. Drawn by the sizeable purse, the race drew U.S. based runners from Kenya (1-2 in the men’s race and 1-3 in the women’s), South Africa, & Tanzania to go along with Olympic Trials marathoner Peter de la Cerda who wound up third. The 10K was a Pacific Association USAT&F Grand Prix Series race with points and prize money for individuals and teams. Last year only one club member (Stan Coombs) competed in this category but this year there were 23 finishers. SLDC had six teams, seven trophy winners (Neil, Frank, Charlie Penrose, Mary, Kaeti, Jean, & Libby), and more than a dozen individuals scoring points in the season standings (all the trophy winners along with Kristie, Ardy, Wayne, Larry, Stan Coombs, & Rick). Neil’s interval training came in handy as he hung on to his third place award by a matter of seconds as the next three finishers across the line were 4, 7, & 10 seconds back and all in his age group. George McClintock wasn’t close to winning a trophy but he did turn out to be the only SLDC winner in the big prize drawing, taking home a mountain bike. Full results are at
