DEATH VALLEY, DECEMBER 2 - DEATH VALLEY MARATHON:

From John Fetcho - ÒHereÕs a report on the Death Valley Borax Marathon held on December 2. I was able to run a lot quicker than I anticipated, especially considering I only had one 20 mile training run and did not have any weeks with more than 35 miles. I went into the race hoping to break 3:30 and qualify for Boston. I beat that time by 9 minutes so I was pleased after I finished but not while I was running! I finished 12th overall, 1st in my division (50 to 54) in 3:21:04 out of 156 finishers. The course was all below sea level (the lowest point being 246 feet below sea level) but don't let them kid you that it is flat! The elevation chart makes it look like the hills are gentle but when you have run 22 miles, any uphill is nasty!  It was in the 23rd mile that I had to walk about 100 yards but there were so few participants that no one passed me while I was walking. I was able to jog most of the rest of the way and only walked one more time for a short distance after the last aid station. The weather was gorgeous, about 45 degrees at the start and up to about 55 when I finished, with no wind.  I must have looked a mess when I finished because one of the finish volunteers walked me over to the Gatorade table. They tell you to take extra water with you and I didn't. So, even though it was a very long drive (6 hours one way), it was worth it. There was no way you could get lost in the crowd because there wasn't one! Now I have to start training for my cross country ski trip to Glacier Point in February. See you at the workouts!Ò

RIDGECREST, DECEMBER 3 - OVER THE HILL TRACK CLUBÕS HIGH DESERT 30K & 50K TRAIL RUNS:

173. Dave Bourne/SLO-SLDC 7:01:16  (198 finishers + 109 in the 30K). This yearÕs race was both the RRCA Southern California Championship and the SCA-USAT&F Championship. Despite the raceÕs obscure location, a number of SLDC runners have competed here over the years. The race directors have compiled a data base of all the 30K (1999-2005) & 50K (1986-2005) finishers since the race began. Here is a list of those from SLDC, although they may not have been members the year they ran. They are listed with their overall position in race history and by their best performance. The number in parenthesis is the number of times they ran if more than once.

SAN DIEGO, DECEMBER 9 - FOOTLOCKER NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS (at Balboa Park):

Girls - 10. Jordan Hasay 18:14. . . Jordan Hasay of Mission Prep had a chance to become the fourth girl to win two national titles but faded down the stretch and finished 10th in 18:14, more than a minute slower than her winning time last year. Kathy Kroeger of Franklin, Tenn., won in 17:29.  "They tried to do what I did last year and it worked," said Hasay, who pulled away in the final mile last year to win her title in 17:05. "I felt really good the first two miles and then I just died." Hasay said she blamed her performance on a long night in her hotel room.  "I've been really nervous," she said. "I didn't sleep very much last night so I was tired."  Hasay said she did come away with at least one lesson. "I learned how to lose," she said. "I'm disappointed, but I'm not going to let it get me down." - /LA Tiimes/ -
