ARROYO GRANDE, MAY 26 - 16TH ANNUAL STRAWBERRY STAMPEDE:

One of the most popular area events for out-of-town entrants, these races drew people from Laguna Beach, San Mateo, Friant, Tehachapi, Aptos, Huntington Beach, Glendale, San Ramon, San Jose, Long Beach, San Francisco, Bakersfield, Porterville, Shafter, and more than dozen other cities throughout the state. It was a nice change in local race demographics as 6 of the top 10 finishers in the 5K were teenagers, although the masters were equally competitive with 10 of the top 25. With awards three deep in five year divisions in both races, SLDC had 26 medal winners (14 in the 5K and 12 in the 10K).

PASO ROBLES, JUNE 15 - SUMMER STAMPEDE 5K:

This first time event covered a hilly course on Jack Creek Road between Highway 46 & Vineyard Drive west of Paso Robles. With not even enough advance notice to appear in last month’s newsletter, the race still drew 40 entrants, almost half from SLDC thanks to flyers mailed out two weeks before the event. Attendance paid off for most of the entries as divisional winners went home with two bottles of wine each and SLDC took first for men and women 40/49, 50/59, 60/69. & 70+. The race was directed by Ivan Huff as a fund raiser for the Paso Robles High cross country team for which Ivan is the coach.

Amaya Dempsey was 6th in the children’s half mile after being pushed in the stroller by Jim in the 5K.
