PALO ALTO, MAY 20 - SKYLINE RIDGE TRAIL RUNS: Chuck and Marian Fiorentino completed this Pacific Coast Trail Running event along Skyline Ridge above Palo Alto. Weather conditions were great, sunny and breezy. Marian completed the 37 km in 4:10:04 and was 10th overall/ 3rd woman while Chuck finished the 50 km in 6:02:45, 10th overall and 3rd in the 50/59 age bracket. ChuckÕs next goal is to complete a 50 miler and he is shooting for the Headlands event on August 11. Chuck has found that Òthe learning curve for ultras is steep. You really have to monitor yourself and are constantly adjusting your training, fluids, and fuel more than in any other type of running. I have gotten lots of tips and suggestions from other ultra runners, but you still need to spend a long time learning your own strengths and weaknesses.Ó 200 runners participated in these four events (14K, 23K, 37K, & 50K), conducted by the same group that holds the trail runs at Montana de Oro. Running the 37K and placing second was former SLO resident Martha Blackwell, now living in Palo Alto. Martha was the winner of the RRCA WomenÕs Distance Festival at Laguna Lake Park and several other events during her time in Pismo Beach.

SACRAMENTO, JUNE 2 - CALIFORNIA STATE HIGH SCHOOL TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS:

800 Meters - 9. Tonie Williams/SLO 2:14.22.               3200 Meters - 1. Jordan Hasay/Mission Prep 10:06.76.

Mission Prep star pulls away to win state title (by Joshua D. Scroggin, The Tribune) - Running to defend the title she won last year as a freshman, Jordan Hasay led from beginning to end, breaking away from runner-up Laurynne Chetelat of Davis in the final two laps and beating the rest of the field by more than 20 seconds. For Hasay, the race at Hughes Stadium was a return to the site of her last defeat when Chetelat edged her in the Meet of Champions earlier this season. This race quickly boiled down to Hasay and Chetelat who stuck close as the duo pulled away but by the end, Chetelat had fallen back. ÒI knew she would do that,Ó Hasay said. ÒBut it caught up with her towards the end. It definitely helped me.Ó Hasay used the competition to speed to her fourth sub-10:10 time of the season in her ongoing quest to break 10 minutes. SheÕs a handful of seconds away but that goal took a backseat on Saturday. ÒIt was lingering in the back of my mind,Ó Hasay said Òbut I just wanted to win the state title.Ó
