SACRAMENTO, APRIL 28 - MEET OF CHAMPIONS: From The Tribune -
In
a bout between two heavy hitters in the 1,600 meters, Mission PrepÕs Jordan
Hasay was relegated to second place. Hasay squared off with Oak Ridge senior
Alex Kosinski who used the final 300 meters to pull away from Hasay and win in
4:38.15. ÒToday was OK,Ó said Hasay, who ran 4:43.85. ÒI didnÕt have a very
good day. It was really hot. It was good, though, because IÕll learn from it.Ó
Later in the evening, Hasay finished second in the 3,200, running 10:32.30.
Hasay won both events last year, including the 1,600 over Kosinski. This year,
Kosinski answered back. The pair battled for most of the race. Kosinski led
after the first two laps but Hasay took the lead on the third lap. The
difference between the two came down to the last few hundred meters. ÒShe had a
really good kick,Ó Hasay said. The late push helped Kosinski surpass HasayÕs
previous time of 4:40.33 for the top national mark in the 1,600 this year. As
for Hasay, she debated about running the 3,200, which was held two hours later,
and decided to run minutes before the race started. ÒI wasnÕt sure but we decided to go for it.Ó

ATASCADERO, MAY 3 - PAC-7 LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS: (From The Tribune, by Joshua D.
Scroggin)
After
taking first and second in the shot put, the Arroyo Grande boys imagined if it
could do the same in the discus, the Eagles would win the league title. But
Paso Robles thrower Tom Nagengast took first in the discus and teammate Oscar
Torres came in third to deny Arroyo Grande valuable team points. Nathan Nelson,
Reihia Todd, and the Paso Robles runners did the rest, helping earn the
Bearcats a win over the Eagles. ÒOur goal at the beginning of the year was to
win the league,Ó Nelson said. ÒWe have the best group of guys Paso Robles has
had in a long time and we wanted to make the most of it.Ó That desire was
evident throughout the team. Todd won both the 1,600 and 3,200 in 4:29.74 and
9:58.72. But what added key points to the BearcatsÕ team total was the second
place finisher in both events: Paso RoblesÕ Travis Hallanan. Hallanan leaned past the EaglesÕ
Fernando Zamora to finish 0.2 seconds ahead of him in the 1600 and then
outkicked him again down the stretch in the 3200.
