The Trinidad to Clam Beach Run (by Ralph Philbrick, from
the Santa Barbara AA web site) - Four distances were offered at this
race with the traditional one of 8 3/4 miles having a 40 year history. Out of
960 finishers, 395 favored this distance. The next most popular was the 5 3/4
miles with 320 while the 3 miler had 139 and the half marathon drew 106. There
were 2 different start times, 3 starting points, and 2 finish lines, depending
on the distance, although it was not as confusing as it sounds and race
logistics, including shuttle buses, went smoothly. The main features were a
hilly, undulating run through a coastal spruce forest on closed local roads
and, for all events except the 3 miler, a dash through the mouth of the frigid
Little River with a finish of 2 to 3 miles on the firm sand of Clam Beach. The
temperature at the start was in the low 40s and the finish felt even colder
because of a strong wind on the unprotected beach, yet most were running in
T-shirts by that time.
The
start for the 8 3/4 and 3 miles was south of Patrick's Point State Park north
of the town of Trinidad with bagpipe music and costumed runners. Roughly 3
miles on either side of small but supportive Trinidad there were several short,
steep uphills, and corresponding downhills as the road dips into small coastal
drainages. Just before Clam Beach the course turned and descended steeply to a
small sandy parking lot, then continued on to the attractive but daunting
knee-deep water of Little River. Here there was a safety rope, 3 assisting
lifeguards, and a fire truck with an emergency crew. The leaders splashed
straight through the icy water while the most timid were carried across. A
conservative strategy was to wade barefoot and return to running shoes for the
sand, though a few finished the race in their bare feet. This year the crossing
was brief and relatively shallow. The broad sandy beach was rock-free and, with
brief exceptions, nicely compacted but there was no protection from a chilling
wind. Timing chips were retrieved at the finish and no numbers were used.
Oranges, bananas, and water were provided and there was a large beach bonfire.
However, the unique feature of the finish area was the Humboldt State Marching
Lumberjacks who provided music before playing their way into waist-deep ocean
waves.
Quite
a collection of runners shared the day. Triathlete Mike Pigg enjoyed a
leisurely (1:02) go at the 8 3/4 miles while a 17-year-old local boy finished
3rd in 46:16 and and 15-year-old local girl Yasmine White finished as 1st woman
and 18th overall. Considering the course difficulty, the 3 longer races were
quite competitive. The 3 mile catered to the youngest runners but was won in
18:22. The winning time for the 8 3/4 was 44:26 with 1st and 2nd going to
runners from Oregon. The winner of the half (1:16) was 3 minutes ahead and the
5 3/4 was won in 31:57 for the men and 38:27 for the women. When you go, you
need to be prepared for possible cold, rain, and water up to your waist but you
will definitely enjoy an unusual race.
