PASO ROBLES, MARCH 28 Ð WINE COUNTRY 5K & HALF MARATHON:

A warm morning slowed times in the half marathon as both races drew about the same number of starters. Participants got their moneyÕs worth with a post-race breakfast, souvenir wine glasses which went to the top 100, customized medals in five year age divisions in each race, and a colorful T-shirt to all entrants. The races, along with a half mile Grape Stomp for kids, were directed by Steve McAllen & Russ Meznarich.

ATASCADERO, APRIL 3 Ð DASH THROUGH A.S.H. 5K:  

This was the first year for this event, held as a benefit for CASA (Voices for Children) and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. In addition to the runners, there were 25 walkers covering the out-and-back course on the grounds of Atascadero State Hospital. The race was directed by Charlie Joslin with help from fellow ASH staff members Rich Reynaga & Gary Raymond (when they werenÕt running) and timing by Kevin Cooper. Winner Tom McKeown, who turns 50 in May, was followed by 12 year old Jordan Hasay as SLDC accounted for the first 9 finishers.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, APRIL 19 (PatriotÕs Day) Ð 108TH B.A.A. BOSTON MARATHON:

Mary Cooper was seeded #1 among the 10 SLDC entrants and thatÕs how she ended up as she placed 21st in the womenÕs masters division out of 1982 entrants in that category and 96th female out of 6,239 women. Times were slowed considerably by temperatures in the mid to upper 80Õs with Field Gibson performing the best, only 5 minutes off his qualifying mark. Places below are slightly out of sync as the times are for chip time and places are based upon elapsed time.

This event was a big success with over 300 participants, led by a 1-2-3 finish from Matt Ruane, Devin Jones, & Garth Wilwand. Other SLDC awards winners were Matthew Shuck (2nd-19 & Under); John Tiffin, George McClintock, & Russ Raymond (1-2-3, 50/59); Jim Murray & Frank Spada (1st & 3rd, 60+); and Chris Shuck (2F-50/59).
