BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, APRIL 17 - THE 110TH B. A. A. BOSTON MARATHON

Area runners win at Boston Marathon

San Luis Distance Club places first in the Women's Masters Team division at the prestigious road race                                                                                                        from The Tribune

When Lori Hashim crossed the finish line in Monday's 110th running of the Boston Marathon, the San Luis Distance Club had just won one of the oldest and most prestigious road races in the world. But the team didn't learn it had won the Women's Masters team race until it received a phone call some five hours later. "We didn't find out until 8 p.m. that night," said Nancy Steinmaus, the team's second finisher. "I was eating dinner when we found out. Someone in California saw where we finished on the Boston Web site and called." There it was, on BostonMarathon.org. The San Luis Distance Club, winners of the Women's Masters team division at the 26-mile, 385-yard Boston Marathon — a grueling race that included a starting field of 20,117 entrants from 94 countries and 50 states. That enormous wave of runners is what delayed the announcement that the San Luis Distance Club had won its division with a three-person time of 9 hours, 44 minutes and 13 seconds, beating the next team by close to two minutes. 43 teams were entered in the womenÕs masters division.

"I never would have thought in our wildest dreams that we could win it," said Janet Norem, who finished first among her teammates in 3:07:38 (1,847th overall). "I never would have thought that we would take something home, so that was cool." The five-person team was made up of Norem (Grover Beach), Steinmaus (San Luis Obispo), Hashim (Morro Bay), Martina Kingman (Paso Robles) and Mary Cooper (San Luis Obispo).  All five runners completed the marathon. The top three scoring runners were Norem, Steinmaus (3:10:03, 2,181st overall) and Hashim (3:26:32, 5,148th).  The San Luis Distance Club team was later presented with Orrefors Crystal bowls at an awards ceremony after the race.  The second-place Whirlaway Racing Team from Massachusetts finished in 9:46:01, 1:48 back of the winners. The San Luis Distance Club's men's team didn't place but had its three scoring runners each finish in less than 3 hours and 40 minutes. Santa Margarita's Mark Martins led the way in 3:00:39, followed by teammates Henry Hernandez (3:21:24) of Los Osos and Kevin Cooper (3:33:04) from San Luis Obispo. Temperatures in the 50s kept the runners cool and allowed about 98 percent of the 20,117 starters to finish.  "It was perfect marathon conditions," Steinmaus said. "And the spectators were legendary. For 26 miles, it's just lined with people cheering for you. It was pretty special."

From KSBY-TV - San Luis ObispoÕs Nancy Steinmaus, Lori Hashim, and Janet Norem were the first womenÕs team to cross the finish line in the "Women Over 40" division at the 110th annual Boston Marathon. As the oldest and most popular marathon, it attracts thousands of serious runners from around the world to Boston. "It was such an energetic, exciting thing with all the crowds. I'd never experienced anything like it. In a lot of races, you're just plodding along by yourself," says Norem. "This one was just great, there were lots of people all along the route." But not just anyone is allowed to participate in this prestigious race. To snag a spot at the starting line, one has to qualify, which means that everyone making the 26.2-mile trek is an experienced distance runner. For Hashim, finishing in Boston on Monday marks her 20th marathon, and her last.  "You never know what's going to come out in any one marathon. For me in Boston, I thought the first nine miles I was going to have to pull out because my foot was hurting. At one point, I stopped and had to re-tie my laces, and I thought, oh no, I'm not going to be able to finish," she said. All three central coast women finished in under 3:30 and attribute their stellar performance to months and months of training. (An interview with the three was televised on KSBY on Wednesday, two days after the race.)

ATASCADERO, MARCH 25 - HARES & HOUNDS 5K & YOUTH MILE (at Atascadero Lake Park):

It may be that everyone else is slow or that the old guys are fast. Whatever the reason, five of the top ten finishers were in the 50+ division, led (in age) by 68 year old Neil Wilcox. Derek Engard, 30, topped the open runners and was the first SLDC finisher. Derek, Heidi Harrison, Richard Reynaga, & Stan Reyes (clad in his SLDC racing singlet) had their pictures in The Tribune in a group shot of the start as part of the newspaperÕs race coverage. Both male and female course records are held by SLDC members, the menÕs at 17:04 by Mike Kinter in 2000 and the womenÕs at 18:38 by Jordan Hasay as a 12 year old in 2004. Complete results are available at www.teamkman.org.

LA HABRA, APRIL 1 - LA HABRA 10K: From John M. Tiffin, Los Osos, ŌMy son & I ran the La Habra 10K for the second year in a row, only this time in the rain. It's a nice course with a few hills to add a challenge. Even with the rain, we both improved over last year when I misread the starting time and we arrived just in time to jump in as the gun when off! Former local standout Sergio Reyes, a long-time friend of my son, was here and finished second, saying his calves were still tight after his 18th place (2:23+) finish in the L.A. Marathon. The biggest news for us came during the post-race raffle when I won two tickets to go anywhere Southwest Airlines flies.Ķ
