ÒThis race was held on some of the same mountain trails as the 33 mile run held here in June and the course elevation ranges from 6700Õ to 8200Õ. I finished in 3:12 with the winning male at 1:45 and the first female coming in at 2:10. The actual distance was 15 miles as thereÕs no such thing as a short course in Big Bear. What was the 50K (31.1 miles) was finally measured and is now a 33 miler.Ó

PASO ROBLES, SEPTEMBER 28 - HERITAGE OAKS BANK RUNS: Last yearÕs newsletter headline for the open race read ÒKenyans come to Paso RoblesÓ. The Kenyans were back again this year and so were runners from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Russia, and the Ukraine, all chasing the Moroccan race winner to a new course record. The biggest news was a national record of 29:05 by Eddy Hellybuyck in the masters race, only 10 seconds off the winning time in the open. With a small turnout in the upper age divisions, SLDC ended up with four national age group champions and four other place winners. Taking national titles were Kaeti Ecker (F-55/59), Giovanni Schaefer (F-65/69), Libby Baker (F-75/79), & Stan Coombs (80+), joined on the awards platform by Neil Wilcox (2nd-65/69), Charley Penrose (2nd-70/74), Lou Squazzoni (3rd-70/74), & Frank Spada (3rd-75/79). SLDC runners made up 1/8 of the entire national masters championship field.
