HUNTINGTON
BEACH, AUGUST 19 Ð SUNSET IN THE PARK:
From John Tiffin, ÒMy son John & I
ran the ÒSunset in the ParkÓ cross country event on August 19th at
Central Park West in Huntington Beach. The race was USAT&F sanctioned and
covered grass, dirt, and pavement with some hills. We did the 4.8 mile course
which followed a 2,8 mile race that started half an hour earlier. This was an
enjoyable event with 125 runners in the 4.8 mile and 169 in the shorter
race.Ó Results - 1. Sal Bautista

MANITOU
SPRINGS, COLORADO, AUGUST 22 Ð PIKES PEAK MARATHON:
Steve von Dohlen/Paso Robles 5:52:28 (146th out of 801 finishers with a time of 3:52:42 for the
ascent and 1:59:46 for the descent). . . ÒOn August 22, I ran the Pikes Peak Marathon in Colorado
which has truly earned its nickname as "America's Toughest Marathon!"
It starts at the base of Pikes Peak at 6,295 feet and then climbs to the summit
of 14,110Õ in 13.32 miles. That's 7,815 feet of elevation gain at altitude,
with an average grade of 11%. Then you turn around and run back to the bottom
to complete the 26.2 mile round-trip. I had a fun time; the race was
well-organized and tough! Check out the web site at www.pikespeakmarathon.org for more info. I
did the marathon as part of a team that friends of ours back east put together
-- "Team Triumph" Ð to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation
(LAF) in its fight against cancer. See their web site at www.teamtriumph.org to donate or for links
to the LAF. To date we have raised over $7500 and still hope to reach our goal
of $10,000. It's always great to do a special run like this with friends and
even more so when it's for a cause like the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Thanks
to those who donated.Ó
GROVER
BEACH, AUGUST 28 Ð 16TH ANNUAL DUNE RUN RUNS:
With more
publicity and new management from the Grover Beach Recreation Department,
turnout more than doubled from last year with 37 finishing the 5K walk, 77
participating in the 5K run, and 54 completing the 10K run. Pismo ÒStride with
the TideÓ winner Jordan Hasay racked up another victory, finishing well ahead
of former Cabrillo HS cross country team member Kent Yankee in the 5K while
Paul Lee took top honors in the 10K. (Results from Mike Twigg & Stan
Coombs)
