SANTA BARBARA, SEPTEMBER 3 - PIER TO PEAK HALF MARATHON (319 finishers, 3996Õ elevation gain):

180. Elyse Matson/16/ Arroyo Grande 2:46:19 .. 182. Ben Praker/43/Pismo Beach 2:47:28 .. 242. Jim Billuris/Cambria -SLDC 3:13:33 .. 252. Linda Ratley/43/ Santa Maria-SLDC 3:23:44. . . From Jim Billuris, ÒThis race climbs from Stearns Wharf on the waterfront to the top of La Cumbre Peak. It was a spectacular view from the finish at 4000' up, overlooking the ocean and pier where we began. It was quite a challenge for which I was overwhelmed and underprepared. The race was well organized, had wonderful support, and the weather cooperated. Some of these athletes are amazing! IÕd like to do it again but only after logging a lot more uphill training miles.Ó

The 2006 Morro Bay Invitational brought a total of 622 runners representing  23 schools from the Southern and Central CIF sections to run 2.7 miles over grass, dirt trails, soft sand, and some asphalt. Though the format is casual (no team scoring, individual or team awards), the level of competition is excellent. The meet provides coaches with an opportunity to look at their athletes in competition without the pressures that exist in races later in the season. Coaches may enter as many runners as they choose in any of the four races.
