LOMPOC, AUGUST 11 - CITY OF LOMPOC SPRINT TRIATHLON:

HUNTINGTON BEACH, AUGUST 16 - SUNSET IN THE PARK: From John Tiffin - ÒMy son John & I ran our third "Sunset in the Park" race on the evening of August 16th. Along with the two Great American Adventure runs, which have been held in late winter or early spring, this makes the fifth time we've run this course. With race director Oscar Rosales talking seriously about retirement, this may be one of the last times, although he said he probably will produce this race in '08. The evening includes a 2.8 race followed by a 4.8 mile race over a cross-country course with some runners opting to run both events. We only did the 4.8 mile course with John finishing 14th out of 50 in 35:15. I was 16th in 36:28. The winner, in 27:11, was J.T. Sullivan, who also won the 2.8 mile in 14:41. As the Dyestatcal.com web site said, Òconditions were very warm," with which we agree. Our times were our slowest of the five races for each of us, although we did both finish first in our age groups.Ó

SAN SIMEON, AUGUST 18 - 3RD ANNUAL PIER TO POINT 5K/10K (@ Hearst Beach State Park):

Thanks to a good recruiting effort by Myrna Brown at the Wednesday night workouts, there were over 40 members showing up for this event. Times were slow because these courses were slightly long and, like the following weekÕs Dune Run, were not on the usual Òflat and fastÓ courses. The 10K was two laps of the cross country style 5K route on Hearst Ranch property not usually open to the public with beautiful views and a finish along the beach. The races were sponsored by the North Coast Youth Football Association and complete results are at www.ncyfa.com.

GROVER BEACH, AUGUST 25 - 19TH ANNUAL DUNE RUN RUNS:

TodayÕs race was noteworthy as the first to have four SLDC participants age 80 and over, half the total on the club roster. Finish line workers included Ralph Wright, Stan Rosenfield, Sheila (OÕDonnell) Miller, Kathy (Lewis) Petker, & Terry Conner. Sheila was an SLDC member in the late 1970Õs/early 1980Õs and the club record holder at the Bonne Bell 10K in San Francisco where she ran 39:28 in 1979 to finish 35th out of 1100 entrants. Kathy competed for Morro Bay HS and was an SLDC member in the early 1980Õs. TerryÕs SLO Rugby Club has provided the aid station at the Thanksgiving Day Hunger Run for many years. TodayÕs race was conducted by the Grover Beach Recreation Department, directed by Rachel Manuele, and complete results are at www.grover.org.
