This was a 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco’s Aquatic Park and Laurie Brown was timed in 44:03 to place 195th overall, 40th in the women’s wetsuit division, and 4th in the women’s 40/44 age group. This was Laurie’s 9th S.F. Bay crossing and it was such fun that she plans to do more.

PASO ROBLES, AUGUST 3 - 4TH BASIL FESTIVAL ROMP THROUGH THE VINEYARD 5K:

SLDC runners made up more than half of the field at this hilly run held at the Sycamore Farms Herb Garden & Winery. Charlie Joslin overcame a fast start by high schooler Jon George to take the lead with a mile to go and win by 50 yards. Nice plaques went to the men’s and women’s winners and awards to the top three. Proceeds went to benefit the North County Women’s Shelter.

CAMBRIA, AUGUST 10 - ENVIR0NMENTAL DEFENSE CENTER 4 MILE (Shamel Park):

This race had a diverse turnout for such a small event. Winner Gary Tuttle, in town for the weekend from Ventura to attend an event at Hearst Castle, is a two-time national AAU Marathon champion, former American record holder at 15K & 20K, and was the 1985 Boston Marathon runner-up. Gary ran just fast enough to win, looking back to make sure his wife Ruth, herself a two time Olympic Trials marathon qualifier, wasn’t catching him. Also competing were two runners visiting from England and Nancy Townsend from Porterville who placed second in the 40+ category and 4th overall in 25:25. Steve Himmelrich 5th place made him not only the first finisher from SLDC but the first from SLO County. Patagonia clothing went to the first male and female finishers in the run and the walk, which in both cases were the first two people across the line. /Doug Buckmaster, Meet Director/
